The practice of tattoo is an ancient art. Decorative tattoos are used to portray statements of individuality, sexuality, belonging, machismo, anger etc. People change with time but unfortunately tattoos are permanent. Tattoos are made as early as early adolescence. Various types of tattoo pigments are used to get different types of colour, such as black, blue, green, red, orange etc.
The most popular laser used for tattoo removal is Q-switched Nd:Yag. It's a long wavelength (1064nm) which causes deeper dermal penetration and more melanin absorption.
The Q-switch Nd:Yag is mainly effective for black coloured tattoos. it can also be used to treat brown ,blue and green tattoos. 532 nm wavelength is used to treat red, orange coloured tattoos.
Tattoo removal requires multiple sessions of laser application. The session is repeated in 3-4 weekly intervals. If the laser tattoo removal treatment is painful, topical numbing cream can be applied to make it comfortable. Complete removal of the tattoo takes around 6 months.
It's best to go for a tattoo removal procedure once the tattoo is mature which takes around 8-12 months after the tattoo is made.
Other techniques for tattoo removal are excision, dermabrasion and plastic surgery procedures. You need to discuss with your Plastic surgeon for the other tattoo removal techniques as visible scarring is an important sequel.
